PREMIER LAUNCHES VICTORIAN STATE TARTAN

Tuesday, 10 June 2008
The Premier, John Brumby, launched an official Victorian State Tartan in Parliament today which recognises the contributions made by one of Victoria first migrant communities, the Scottish.

Mr Brumby said the Victorian State Tartan would add to the rich tapestry of Victoria’s multiculturalism.

“Victoria’s multiculturalism has made us socially, culturally and economically strong and we take great pride in our rich diversity, which is recognised all over the world,” Mr Brumby said.

“Victoria boasts a wonderful mix of people. We come from over 200 countries, speak more than 200 languages and follow about 130 different faiths.

“The Scottish community was one of Victoria’s first migrant communities and together with migrant communities from across the world continues to play an important role in our state’s development.”

The Victorian State Tartan was designed by Mrs Betty Johnston and is registered on the Scottish Tartans World Register.

The Tartan consists of an interwoven pattern of:
  • Blue – representing the colours of the shield on the Victorian Coat of Arms and the background of the Eureka Stockade Flag;
  • Five white lines – representing the five white stars of the Southern Cross which appear on the Victorian Coat of Arms and the Eureka Stockade flag;
  • Green – representing the olive branch on the Victorian Coat of Arms; and
  • Pink – representing the form of the Common Heath, Victoria’s floral emblem.

More than 32,000 Victorians are Scottish-born and an estimated 162,000 Victorians identify themselves as having Scottish heritage.

Mr Brumby said the launch of the Victorian State Tartan was a great day for Victorians with a Scottish heritage and further demonstrated the Government’s commitment to recognising the contributions of migrant communities to society.

“I am delighted that Victoria, which already has a sister-state relationship with Scotland, now has its own State Tartan,” he said.

“I want to thank Mrs Johnston for her enthusiasm and support for this initiative.”
