As Secretary of the Victorian Scottish Union, I am delighted to report that 103 years on, the VSU continues to function as an ‘umbrella organisation’ for some 28 affiliated Scottish groups, made up of Caledonian Societies, Scottish Societies, the Robert Burns Club, Highland Dancing Societies, Scottish Country Dance Societies, Highland Gathering and Clan Associations.
In 2005, the Victorian Scottish Union celebrated its Centenary and, as Rushworth was the venue for the first Annual Conference in 1906, the VSU has again chose Rushworth to stage this memorable event.
The VSU Council saw this Centenary as an opportunity for all Scots to celebrate this wonderful milestone as a Scottish community; that is, Scots affiliated with the Victorian Highland Pipe Band Association, Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, Council of Clans, Highland Dancing Organisations, Scottish Gaelic Society, Scottish Ancestry Group, Highland Gathering Associations and interested individuals. After all, the VSU was the first ‘Scottish Umbrella Organisation’ in Victoria.
Author W. Schrank - Past Preseident, Past Chief, Past Secretary, Life Member of VSU
In 2006 our conference was staged in Warrnambool at the Uniting Church, Koroit St. The VSU conference has been staged successfully in Warrnambool twice previously. This conference was opened by Cr Mr Jack Daffy of the Warrnambool City Council and Dr Elizabeth Nolan of The Uniting Church Warrnambool.
In 2007 the VSU successfully invaded Maryborough for our conference. During this conference the daughter of well known and loved locals Joan and Bill Sinclair, Liane Sinclair, was elected chief of the VSU for the 2007 - 2008 and I am certain that Liane will remember this conference and the ceremony well into her dotage.
September 2008 saw the VSU invade Glen Waverley for the AGM / Conference ably hosted by the Glenbrae Celtic Dancers.
Carmel Williams our new President is an active member of the Glen Brae Celtic Dancers, also present were many members of the Clan Sinclair Australia who came far and wide to assist Carmel and the incoming executive council to celebrate their new positions.
The VSU would like to thank Christy, and the staff at the Village Green Hotel, the Glen Waverley Uniting Church, Braemar, Hawthorn City Pipe Band, the Monash City Council, Mrs Rewa Feenaghty, Cr Charlotte Bain, the Ringwood RSL and the Scottish Banner for their contribution towards the smooth running of the Conference.
